He affirmed the U.S. commitment to Ukraine.
On his way to Warsaw, Poland, President Biden made an unannounced stop in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met with President Zelensky in the Mariinsky Palace. After signing the guest book, President Biden announced additional aid in the amount of a half-billion dollars would shortly be coming to that besieged country.
“One year later, Kyiv stands, and Ukraine stands. Democracy stands,” President Biden said during his meeting with President Zelensky. “The Americans stand with you, and the world stands with you.”
Together, they visited St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery in Kyiv, then went to a memorial wall where they participated in a wreath-placing ceremony.
According to the senior director for Europe at the National Security Council, President Biden said it “was symbolically important” for him to make the trip and stand side-by-side with the Ukrainian president. Mindful of security, she explained, “The team, obviously, was taking a very close look at all of the security risks involved and the President ultimately decided it was a calculated risk and one that he was prepared to take.”
